By working closely with partners in the student’s country of origin, we support young women in three ways

1. Full scholarships

  1. We help students prepare for college and university applications, including providing English language training where needed, prior to entering post-secondary education;
  2. We provide financial and emotional support and mentoring during their post-secondary education;
  3. We provide post education support with respect to graduate programs, advising on job opportunities, and linking up with mentors.

Our needs-based scholarships are awarded in conjunction with collaborating institutions, who provide the majority of financial assistance, thus allowing us to leverage our resources to help many more young women.

Our selection process is merit based and transparent: admission decisions are made at arm’s length from us by our collaborating institutions. We provide separate input into all applications, which our collaborating institutions take into consideration as they wish.

2. Partial scholarships

We are a support of last resort. When a student with financial need has received a written offer of admission from a credible degree granting post-secondary institution, at the undergraduate or graduate level, and all her sources of financial assistance have been exhausted, we can step in and bridge the shortfall, to a maximum of CAD$5,000 per year, subject to availability of funds.

The funding decision is made by our board of directors, on a rolling basis, once the student has completed our application in full and submitted all required documentation.

3. Mentored scholarships

  1. We help EXCEPTIONALLY bright young women prepare for college and university applications generally to top-tier U.S. institutions that have scholarships available for international students. Such full scholarships are extremely competitive, and require outstanding academic achievement; excellent SAT and other common-exam scores; superb essays; and compelling leadership that enriches the student body;
  2. We provide English language training where needed, prior to entering post-secondary education;
  3. We provide financial and emotional support and mentoring during their post-secondary education;
  4. We provide post education support with respect to graduate programs, advising on job opportunities, and linking up with mentors.

Such top-tier institutions will provide the majority of financial assistance, while the Spark of Hope can offer some financial top-up if required (for example for flights), thus allowing us to leverage our resources to help many more young women. Admission decisions are made at arm’s length from us by these institutions.
